Is Turnip Keto Friendly?

Pre-low-carbing days I would eat parsnips or carrots if I wanted a root vegetable. So I was interested to learn that one medium turnip (approx. 4oz) contains only 6g net carbs in total!

But what do you actually DO with turnips? Well, you *can* eat them raw – they can be grated and added to salads – but the flavor is much stronger. They can be grilled, roasted or mashed – basically most ways of cooking that are used for potatoes can also be used for turnips. Turnip Fries - a tasty low carb alternative to potato!

How to Make Low Carb Turnip Fries

To prepare the turnips, peel them and cut them into matchsticks.

Add oil, onion powder and paprika to a bag or bowl, then add the turnip. A plastic sealable bag works well for this – pretty much the same method as my zucchini fries! Move the turnip around inside the bag or bowl so that they are fully coated in the mixture.

Pour some oil into a baking pan – you'll need to use one with a high smoke point, as you need it to get pretty hot to crisp up the turnip. Something like sunflower, canola, peanut or corn oil would be good, depending on what you prefer and what your diet allows.

Place the pan in a preheated oven. Remove it after 5 minutes and carefully add the turnip – the oil might splash. Season the turnip fries with salt and pepper, then roast until they start to crisp up – about 25 minutes.

Sprinkle over some fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to serve. These fries are the perfect side dish to steak – but I've also been known to eat them on their own! Or you can simply serve them with mayo or low carb ketchup!

Low Carb Turnip Fries

Low Carb Turnip Fries

Yield: 4 Servings
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 large turnips
  • 6 tbs oil, divided
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • salt and pepper
  • fresh thyme or parsley, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425F.
  2. Peel the turnips and cut it into matchsticks.
  3. Add 2 tbs of the oil, onion powder and paprika to a bag or bowl, then add the turnip. Turn to coat in the mixture.
  4. Add the remaining oil to a baking pan and place in the oven for 5 minutes.
  5. Carefully add the turnip to the hot oil, then season with salt and pepper.
  6. Roast for 25 minutes or until starting to get crispy.
  7. To garnish, sprinkle some fresh herbs like thyme or parsley over the top.

The flavor of these were good, but mine did not get crispy. I used grape seed oil, as well as a 1 lb bag of small turnips (my grocery store did not carry large turnips). Do you think I used too much oil? Or is the grape seed oil the problem?

In my pre keto days, I used to sprinkle my roast potatoes with semolina to make them soooooo crispy. Obviously semolina, being 75g carbs per 100g is not ideal for keto. Perhaps in tiny amounts? My recipe for this was to par boil for five mins, shake in the pan with some almond flour and then roast in shortening for 40 mins!

I make these with swede Im not sure what you guys call then Rutabaga?? but they are yum.

Your calories are wrong....you have 218 per serving....it should be around 28 calories per each 100g serving....I think you have a "1" in between by accident in the calorie amount text.

The serving size is not 100g, it is a quarter of the whole recipe. So actually the calorie count is correct. I hope that helps!
