This low carb and sugar free sauce requires a few ingredients, but only requires a minimal cooking time. It's the perfect accompaniment to roast chicken, pulled pork, or ribs, but you could also use it in wraps and for much more! Here are some recipes that use this sauce:

How to Make a Low Carb Smoky Barbecue Sauce

In a saucepan, mix together tomato sauce (from a can, not ketchup!), white wine vinegar, minced garlic (or garlic paste), dry mustard powder, paprika, and the key ingredient: liquid smoke. Liquid smoke is an all-natural flavor enhancer with no carbs, no additives, and no preservatives. It packs quite a punch and is perfect for making this sauce. You'll also need some sweetener – I love using classic Lakanto.  But if you had some homemade simple syrup to hand – that would also work well!

Once you have the desired sweetness, bring the sauce to the boil and then reduce to a simmer for five minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a saucepan except the salt and pepper. Start with two tablespoons of the sweetener, taste for sweetness, and add more if desired.
  2. Bring to the boil then reduce to simmer for five minutes.
  3. Season with salt and pepper as required.

Notes

Makes about 1 cup of sauce. 1.5g net carbs per serving of 2 tablespoons.

How would this be without the sweetener? I don't use sugar (of course) and I avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible.

I haven't tried it but I think it would be more like a smoky tomato sauce. There are lots of natural sweeteners that aren't artificial these days - and many of them are zero carb!
