Thanks to my mother for suggesting this recipe! Of all the ingredients I've tried grilling – green onions (or scallions / spring onions, if you prefer) aren't one of them! I finally got round to trying them – and I absolutely loved them!
Carbohydrates in Green Onions
One medium green onion (about 15g) contains a total of 1.1g net carbs, and 0.4g fiber, which makes it 0.7g net carbs. So definitely keto friendly and low carb – and they're a great source of vitamin A. I've used green onions many times as garnish, but this is the first time that they are the star of the show!
Oh – and if you can get hold of Mexican Spring Onions (Cebollas Cambray or Chambray onions), you can use this recipe to make Cebollitas Cambray Asadas! These onions are bigger in size than the regular green onions and the bulb is bigger in proportion to the stem. Cebollitas are a popular topping and condiment in Mexican cuisine for dishes such as tacos, carna asada, and pollo asado.
How to Make Grilled Green Onions
Prepare the green onions by trimming a few inches off the green parts (save them in a ziplock bag in the fridge for garnishing another recipe!), and trim a little off each root.
Place them in a shallow bowl or dish, and drizzle some olive oil over them. Season generously with salt and black pepper.
Transfer the onions to a hot grill. Turn them frequently, until marked on all sides – it takes less than 5 minutes! Alternatively, cook them inside on a grill pan.
And that's it! The onions are juicy and salty – with caramelized sweet parts and crispy parts – they're surprisingly moreish!
This is SUCH a quick and easy recipe – if you happen to have some green onions in the fridge you could decide to add them at the last minute if you were already grilling!
