Just because low-carbers can’t eat pasta doesn’t mean we can’t eat a delicious meat sauce like Bolognese! I decided to make this version in the slow cooker and my house smelled amazing ALL DAY!
Before you go flinging food in the slow cooker, it is advisable to brown off the meat first. This will remove excess water and fat and will drastically improve your sauce! Heat some olive oil in a large skillet and add ground beef, onion powder and Italian seasoning (or dried oregano and basil). Break up the beef and keep cooking until it has all browned.
Drain the meat and discard the liquid. A slotted spoon is a useful tool for this job – you can then spoon the beef straight into the slow cooker. Then add canned diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, red wine (optional – but really adds flavor) and bay leaves. Stir well.

Low Carb Bolognese in the Slow CookerPrint
- 2 tbs olive oil
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes
- 8 oz tomato sauce
- 3 bay leaves
- salt and pepper
- 2 fl oz red wine optional
- Add oil to a large pan and add the beef, onion powder and Italian seasoning. Brown off the meat.
- Drain the meat, discarding the liquid. Add the meat to the slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients. Stir well.
- Cook on high heat for 4 hours or low heat for 8 hours.
